With overwhelming interest from the community, Camp Sagebrush officially has all available spots filled within two weeks of opening registration! The staff here at FCCD are thrilled to share this camp expereience with 40 local students in the shrub steppe this July. For months, staff have been working to set up new experiments, expand the information covered, and give the campers the opprotunity to build career connections and fall in love with the shrub steppe like so many of us have.
Campers will embark this second annual learning adventure, exploring the unique shrub steppe at Sun Lakes—Dry Falls State Park at Camp Delany. Camp Sagebrush has evolved into an exciting outdoor overnight summer camp that gives middle schoolers (5th-7th grades) a more in-depth look at this unique ecosystem while also building friendships and memories amongst the sagebrush.
Guided by experts in the shrub steppe, camp goers will embark on exciting nature hikes, train with wildland firefighters, learn about how to identify and build a fire adapted community, and so much more! Following STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathmatics) campers will learn to utilize several different tools and techniques that are commonly used by professionals that work within the ecosystem to help them understand the many intricate parts that build an ecosystem and how they work together. Some activities include a wildlife monitoring experiment to see what types of wildlife move throughout the camp, native plant identification and the cultural uses of those plants, geological identification within the park, wildland fire training, emergency prepardness preperation, and so much more! They will also create art projects that help build an understanding of the unique beauty that is the shrub steppe while creating bonds and strong relationships with others through team building activities and games.
